About Us

Polari is the leading UK-based online magazine for an LGBTQ readership. Its content is informed & insightful, and features a diverse range of writers from every section of the community. Its look is singularly stylish and equally original.

From its launch on December 3, 2008, Polari Magazine has explored the LGBTQ subculture by looking at what is important to the people who are in it. It’s about the lives we lead, not the lifestyles we’re supposed to lead.

Polari has interviewed writers such as Gore Vidal, Clayton Littlewood and Jonathan Kemp, and musicians such as Tori Amos, Darren Hayes and Patrick Wolf. It has featured outstanding activists such as David Watters and Peter Tatchell, and the pioneering organisations The Trevor Project, The Equal Love Campaign and Wotever World. Its focus is on culture, politics and the arts through articles, columns, features, news and reviews. Its content is written to a high standard, and it does not talk down to its readers.

Polari is designed to nurture the idea of community, whether that be social and political, or artistic and creative. It is your magazine, whether you want to read it, or whether you want to get involved in it.

I can’t tell you how much I love the style and the point of view of this magazine!

What you’re doing is really unique

Meet the Team

Christopher Bryant • Editor

Christopher is co-founder & editor of Polari. He cannot start the day without two cups of coffee, and has a tendency to read for hours then stage imaginary arguments in his head whilst trying to fall asleep. He has a doctorate and trained as an academic. But he got over it.

Bryon Fear • Designer

Co-founder & designer of Polari, Bryon is responsible for the images, illustrations and overall look of the magazine. He makes an awesome cuppa and was once told by an aged Spanish widow that his secret skill was the ability to find lost objects… which is apparently true.

Clementine The Living Fashion Doll • Glamour!

Clementine, the original living fashion doll is the definitive # 1 glamour correspondent on the internet. Her video reports are fresh, funny and regularly one sequin short of the full boob tube. Clementine may be a little dolly, but she ain’t no dummy and is one of Polari‘s biggest assets!

Paul Baker • Opinion

Paul is a lecturer in English Language. He’s written books examining the relationship between language, culture & sexuality. He has charted the rise and fall of the British “gay language” Polari and examined how gay men have been been written about in television & printed media.

Nick Smith • Reviews

Trained as a linguist, now a software developer by day, Nick is rather partial to films, music, theatre, travel, writing, reading, cooking and partaking of a glass of Grey Goose by night. He also makes a mean crab linguine.

B.J. Epstein • Opinion

B.J. Epstein teaches literature and translation at East Anglia University. She is also a writer, editor, and Swedish-to-English translator. One of her main areas of interest is queer literature and in particular how LGBTQ characters are portrayed in books for children and young adults.

Lauren Nowell • Opinion

Lauren Nowell is currently studying Political Science on a pre-law track at the University of Texas at Dallas. She is an avid coffee drinker, proud francophone, and daily newspaper reader (her sudoku skills are exceptional). She loves few things more than women’s soccer and thai food.

Scott De Buitleir • Opinion

Scott De Buitléir has worked in radio since the age of 15, and since 2008 has presented The Cosmo, a weekly radio show for the gay community in Ireland for national broadcaster, RTÉ. Originally from Dublin, Scott now lives in Belfast and works with BBC Northern Ireland.

Tim Bennet-Goodman • Reviews

A bit of a dilettante, his love of literature (especially new writing) is genuine enough. His experience running literature festivals brought him into contact with many famous authors, which convinced him that, by-and-large, he’d rather read their books than meet them.

Little Bastard • Gig Correspondent

Former dancer & music artist Little Bastard is a compulsive gig whore. He can often be found in low-lit bars drinking whisky and bending the ear of anyone who will hear how his mind was blown by Marilyn Manson, his ears blown by Slayer, and his wallet blown by Madonna.
