Nigerian Senate votes for draconian anti-gay law

30 Nov 2011 / 0 Comments / in Campaigns & Politics/by Peter Tatchell

Same-sex marriage and civil unions to be banned.

14 years jail for participants, 10 years jail for helpers & witnesses. Gay advocacy groups & same-sex public affection to be outlawed. Sweeping criminalisation contravenes Article 42 of the Nigerian constitution.

This bill violates the equality and non-discrimination guarantees of Article 42 of the Nigerian Constitution and Articles 2 and 3 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights, which Nigeria has signed and pledged to uphold.

An Equal Love Campaign update: Matthew and Scott

25 Apr 2011 / 1 Comment / in Campaigns & Politics/by David Watters

An Equal Love Case update.

David Watters introduces Matthew and Scott, who have challenged the ban on gay marriage.

Both Matthew and Scott feel that, as gay men, they are more in tune with the broader inequality issues of society and that their participation in the Equal Love campaign was inevitable.

An Equal Love Case update.

David Watters outlines the progress that has been made in seeking marriage equality.

Hope and Remembrance • The Candlelit Vigil 2010

26 Oct 2010 / 7 Comments / in Campaigns & Politics/by David Watters

The 2010 Candlelit Vigil to mark International Day against Hate Crime.

A year after the first Candlelit Vigil, David Watters celebrates the work that has been done.

These vigils of both HOPE and REMEMBRANCE unify and galvanise ALL individuals and communities who share a vision to eradicate bigoted behaviour and, through showing support for ALL victims of Hate Crime, publicly assert that together they will no longer be ineffective minorities but instead a powerful and united voice to affect change in London and the wider world.

Celebrating 40 years of Gay Liberation

15 Aug 2009 / 0 Comments / in Campaigns & Politics, Opinion/by Peter Tatchell

The renowned activist Peter Tatchell on the 40th anniversary of the GLF.

Peter Tatchell looks back on 40 years of gay liberation, and in particular the GLF and its significance.

All that prejudiced nonsense was turned upside down with the advent of GLF in London in 1970. While politicians, doctors, priests and journalists saw homosexuality as a social problem, GLF said the real problem was society’s homophobia.

Driving Ambition

15 Aug 2009 / 8 Comments / in Campaigns & Politics, Interviews/by David Watters

An Interview with Chris Mason

David Watters talks to Chris Mason about Driving Ambition, a 107-day, 48 State, 16,000-mile road-trip with a mission to examine LGBT inequality and discrimination throughout the United States.

In West Virginia we spoke to an openly gay doctor. He and his partner, and their adopted son, live in a rural town in the middle of West Virginia. This is the last place I‘d expected to find someone willing to talk about being gay.

About Polari Magazine

Polari is the leading UK-based online magazine for an LGBTQ readership. Its content is informed & insightful, and features a diverse range of writers from every section of the community. Its look is singularly stylish and equally original.

From its launch on December 3, 2008, Polari Magazine has explored the LGBTQ subculture by looking at what is important to the people who are in it. It’s about the lives we lead, not the lifestyles we’re supposed to lead.

Polari has interviewed writers such as Gore Vidal, Clayton Littlewood and Jonathan Kemp, and musicians such as Tori Amos, Darren Hayes and Patrick Wolf. It has featured outstanding activists such as David Watters and Peter Tatchell, and the pioneering organisations The Trevor Project, The Equal Love Campaign and Wotever World. Its focus is on culture, politics and the arts through articles, columns, features, news and reviews. Its content is written to a high standard, and it does not talk down to its readers.

Polari is designed to nurture the idea of community, whether that be social and political, or artistic and creative. It is your magazine, whether you want to read it, or whether you want to get involved in it.
