Twat and Proud!

01 Dec 2011 / Comments Off / in Opinion/by BJ Epstein

What do you really mean when you call someone a twat?

Why is it considered ok to use words that refer to genitalia to insult people? What does this say about what we think, who we are, and what we’re ashamed of?

My hope is one day we’ll reach a point where when someone says, “Oh, he’s such a twat,” the response will be, “Sounds like he’s a great person, then, because twats are wonderful, beautiful things.”

The Beautiful Friend

01 Dec 2011 / Comments Off / in Oral Histories/by Lauren Nowell

A personal story about accepting a girl friend who has become true to himself.

Lauren’s personal and touching story about a friend’s journey from girl to boy, what that meant to her and what she learned from it.

The stronger version of the kind, warm, and caring friendship we had previously then developed not with the sugary feminine Bekah, but with the sweetly boyish Bek. And it became a beautiful friendship.

The Camp and the Bitchy: Gay Men on TV

Paul Baker asks if the stereotypes of John Inman’s camp queen are over and done with, or does the stereotyping of gay men on TV continue?

Sean Tully in Coronation Street tends to have a better time, but he’s another camp (if more lovable) stereotype. As is Harry from The Only Way in Essex. I suspect Harry has never had an unkind thought, but that could be because his head is full of glitter and sparkles.

Nigerian Senate votes for draconian anti-gay law

30 Nov 2011 / Comments Off / in Bulletin Board/by Peter Tatchell

Same-sex marriage and civil unions to be banned.

14 years jail for participants, 10 years jail for helpers & witnesses. Gay advocacy groups & same-sex public affection to be outlawed. Sweeping criminalisation contravenes Article 42 of the Nigerian constitution.

This bill violates the equality and non-discrimination guarantees of Article 42 of the Nigerian Constitution and Articles 2 and 3 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights, which Nigeria has signed and pledged to uphold.

Nigerian Government Goes Anti-Gay Again

29 Nov 2011 / Comments Off / in Bulletin Board/by Editor

Nigerian Government bans gay marriage

In a country where homosexuality is illegal this is no doubt more posturing.

Among rights activists, it has become a grim joke that homophobia is a rare issue that unites the country’s bickering Muslim north and Christian south.

Christians Wish George Michael Dead

28 Nov 2011 / Comments Off / in Bulletin Board/by News

Christians For A Moral America think the singer should die of AIDS

Christians For A Moral America, surely an ironic title, took to the Tweeting this week to call for the death of George Michael, as he is treated for pneumonia.

They took to Twitter, claiming the singer “has AIDS” and calling for followers to pray for his demise in light of his “satanic lifestyle.”

About Polari Magazine

Polari Magazine is an LGBT arts and culture magazine that explores the subculture by looking at what is important to the people who are in it. It’s about the lives we lead, not the lifestyles we’re supposed to lead.

Its content is informed & insightful, and features a diverse range of writers from every section of the community. Its intent is to help LGBT readers learn about their own heritage and to sustain a link between the present and the past.

Polari is designed to nurture the idea of community, whether that be social and political, or artistic and creative. It is your magazine, whether you want to read it, or whether you want to get involved in it, if you're gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, or queer.

Polari Magazine is all these: it's a gay online magazine; it's a gay and lesbian online magazine; it's an LGBT arts and culture magazine. Ultimately, it is a queer magazine.
