17-24-30 Annual Vigil

Remembering the people killed and injured in the nail bombs detonated in Brixton, Brick Lane and Soho in April 1999 by David Copeland.

“The bombs were designed to stir up hatred in the Black, Asian and Gay communities and result in the election of the BNP. They killed three people, including a pregnant woman, and injured one-hundred and twenty-nine others.”

London Elections and the Queer Vote

27 Apr 2012 / Comments Off / in Opinion/by Tim Bennett-Goodman

London Mayoral Elections 2012.

Tim Bennett-Goodman looks at the forthcoming London Mayoral and Assembly elections from the LGBT perspective, with a not-entirely impartial eye …

“Of course, most of us cast our vote based on a much wider spectrum of issues than just sexuality (which is doubtless as it should be) but we surely want to support a candidate who will do us the most good, or possibly the least harm. “

A Film of Firsts

In an interview of many laughs with the director, producer and star of North Sea Texas we talked about the difficulties of funding gay films and the creative process behind it.

“It’s a remarkable film made more remarkable by the fact that it was Jelle’s first role as an actor, first feature film for director Bavo, and first feature for Yves as producer.”

The Uncommon Reader • Alan Bennett

121 pages • Profile Books • May 3, 2012 [PB]

Tim Bennett-Goodman does not see a knighthood in the offing for the author of this delightfully wicked book.

“Bennett imagines the Palace as peopled by a cast of eccentrics and grotesques, from the prissy private secretary, Sir Kevin Scatchard, to the niffy nonagenarian, Sir Claude Pollington. It is also rife with politicking and camp bitchery.”

Heroes: Gene Robinson

The Fearless Bishop.

Gene Robinson is one of the greatest activists of our time, and he is working to change the Church from within.

“I watched an astounding documentary about Robinson, Love Free or Die, and it changed the way I understood contemporary Christianity. It also changed the way I saw the place of LGBT Christians within the Church. That was down to the eloquence and the persuasiveness of Robinson.”

The Patron Saint of Transvestites

21 Apr 2012 / Comments Off / in Visual Arts/by Michael Langan

A Portrait of the Chevalier D’Éon.

Thomas Stewart’s portrait is on display at Philip Mould showroom in London.

“Stories of the Chevalier’s exploits as diplomat, spy, and master swordsman abound, including claims that D’Éon, disguised as a woman on a secret mission Russia, became one of the Empress’s maids of honour. It seems he could out-scarlet the Pimpernel himself.”

About Polari Magazine

Polari Magazine is an LGBT arts and culture magazine that explores the subculture by looking at what is important to the people who are in it. It’s about the lives we lead, not the lifestyles we’re supposed to lead.

Its content is informed & insightful, and features a diverse range of writers from every section of the community. Its intent is to help LGBT readers learn about their own heritage and to sustain a link between the present and the past.

Polari is designed to nurture the idea of community, whether that be social and political, or artistic and creative. It is your magazine, whether you want to read it, or whether you want to get involved in it, if you're gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, or queer.

Polari Magazine is all these: it's a gay online magazine; it's a gay and lesbian online magazine; it's an LGBT arts and culture magazine. Ultimately, it is a queer magazine.
