Kiss Me Once • Kylie

20 Mar 2014 / Comments Off / in Music/by John Preston

[rating=3]
Released March 17, 2014
Kiss Me Once is a crowd pleasing but uneven effort at maintaining Kylie’s status as pop’s eternal princess.

“This album sees Kylie again working with some of the most established writers and producers available, with reclusive pop extraordinaire herself Sia Furler curating the entire project.”

A Short Requiem Incidentally Featuring Fred Phelps

19 Mar 2014 / Comments Off / in Opinion/by Carrick McDonald

God Hates Fred Phelps.

Fred Phelps is the face of the God of Hate. As he lies on his death death, Carrick McDonald wrestles with his feelings about this much hated man.

“Give a few dollars to a charity for runaway LGBT youth. These kids have been cast out by the Phelps families of the world who aren’t gutsy enough to scream their convictions outside the cemetery gates.”

Released April 28, 2014
Grace Jones’ cover of Gary Numan’s ‘Me! I Disconnect From You’ is rescued for the reissue of her classic album Nightclubbing..

“Her voice is urgent and panicked here but there is a sadness in her delivery too. But those expecting a possessed ‘She’s Lost Control’ or a’Bullshit’ devouring Grace will not find her here. It isn’t sinister, it is an oddly and unexpected warm sounding arrangement.”

Released February 25, 2014
There are on Neneh Cherry’s Blank Project some bold and invigorating pop song structures. The album feels like an authentic, concentrated version of Cherry.

“Neneh Cherry is back. Her art and soul inform this project, blank only for you to fill the role of listener and to share the very human experiences expressed honestly, courageously and often thrillingly throughout.”

Damon Galgut’s remarkable novel Arctic Summer imagines the life of the great novelist E.M. Forster and the conflicts that led him to write A Passage to India.

“Forster knew when his great work had been completed, and the wonder in Damon Galgut’s Arctic Summer is that it enables the reader to feel both the triumph as well as the pain at the heart of this conflict. “

Plynace Wiezowce (Floating Skyscrapers)

Cert: 15 • Poland: 93 min • Matchbox Films / Alter Ego Pictures • March 24, 2014

Atmospheric and powerful. Floating Skyscrapers taps into the culture of homophobia, which demands many to suppress, numb, or even kill their own desires.

“Floating Skyscrapers is very much a film about the unspoken. The script is suggestive and prefers to leave the emotional worlds of the characters to the audiences’ interpretation. The sparse dialogue and tense scenes reveal the unacceptability of his sexuality and the disorder it has made of his world.”

There are very few out there who are creating music and visuals in they way iamamiwhoami do to embody a story that is dynamic, rich and thought provoking.

“‘hunting for pearls’ sparkles and it takes us on another journey. Simply magic.”

About Polari Magazine

Polari Magazine is an LGBT arts and culture magazine that explores the subculture by looking at what is important to the people who are in it. It’s about the lives we lead, not the lifestyles we’re supposed to lead.

Its content is informed & insightful, and features a diverse range of writers from every section of the community. Its intent is to help LGBT readers learn about their own heritage and to sustain a link between the present and the past.

Polari is designed to nurture the idea of community, whether that be social and political, or artistic and creative. It is your magazine, whether you want to read it, or whether you want to get involved in it, if you're gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, or queer.

Polari Magazine is all these: it's a gay online magazine; it's a gay and lesbian online magazine; it's an LGBT arts and culture magazine. Ultimately, it is a queer magazine.
