This album of remixes remoulds and reimagines the material Biophilia and pumps it full of new blood and beats.

“Some say that good artists borrow, great artists steal. If this is the case, each and every remix on here is a masterful product of thievery, as this compilation is exhilarating and outshines some of its source material.”

Placebo: Is the Band Losing Its Effect?

19 Nov 2012 / Comments Off / in Opinion/by Andrew Darley

Placebo Effect.

Andrew Darley looks back at the subversive career of Placebo and asks if the latest EP shows a loss of direction.

“Last month saw the release of B3, a five track EP of brand new material. This small collection of songs will no doubt keep long-time Placebo fans content, if not happy, as it contains glimpses of their signature sound. “

What Richard Did

Cert:15 • Ireland: 87 min • Element Pictures • October 5, 2012

What Richard Did is a gripping and engaging film that looks at a tragedy from many angles and asks, ‘What would you do?’.

“What Richard Did explores the trappings of raw human emotion. It examines how we as people, no matter how civilised and rational we are, can find ourselves in situations in which we act out in ways we wouldn’t typically behave..”

’90s teen horrorThe Craft, with the struggle of the outsider at its heart, is a queer classic.

“During the ’90s, The Craft felt like an antidote to the films dealing with the woes of being a young adult. It comes off like a shot in the dark and feels like the twisted sister of the bubblegum highschool satire of Clueless released the year previously.”

Ghost EP • Sky Ferreira

The new Sky Ferreira EP is a stark departure from her debut, and an experiment that shows nerve and talent.

“Ferreira refrains from anchoring the record with her own personality; instead she lingers behind the strength of the songs suggesting she may be uncertain of her own musical identity.”

Jiaolong is Caribou frontman (aka Daphni) Daniel Snaith’s response to mainstream dance music.

“The purpose of Snaith’s new moniker is to experiment with the genre and create songs people, “could not have conceived of existing,” before hearing them.”

The underrated Gus Van Sant movie To Die For was ahead of its time, and features Nicole Kidman as bewitching, unforgettable femme fatale.

“To Die For reveals a sociopathic desire for notoriety, in which people will sacrifice themselves and others around them to get to where they want to be.”

kin • iamamiwhoami

23 Aug 2012 / Comments Off / in Music/by Andrew Darley

[rating=5]
Released June 11, 2012 (digital download), September 3, 2012 (CD)
A real multimedia album, from its story-telling videos and its songs, iamamiwhoami’s kin ranges from wistful dream-pop trip-hop.

“All nine songs swell and pulsate, providing space for Jonna’s commanding voice and personality to blossom. I can’t help but feel that iamamiwhoami is one of the few artists in the last decade who has fully understood and committed to the concept of a multimedia album.”

About Polari Magazine

Polari Magazine is an LGBT arts and culture magazine that explores the subculture by looking at what is important to the people who are in it. It’s about the lives we lead, not the lifestyles we’re supposed to lead.

Its content is informed & insightful, and features a diverse range of writers from every section of the community. Its intent is to help LGBT readers learn about their own heritage and to sustain a link between the present and the past.

Polari is designed to nurture the idea of community, whether that be social and political, or artistic and creative. It is your magazine, whether you want to read it, or whether you want to get involved in it, if you're gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, or queer.

Polari Magazine is all these: it's a gay online magazine; it's a gay and lesbian online magazine; it's an LGBT arts and culture magazine. Ultimately, it is a queer magazine.
