The Insurrectionist

04 Jul 2009 / Comments Off / in Interviews/by Christopher Bryant

An interview with Patrick Wolf.

Patrick Wolf talks his new albumThe Bachelor, the conflict with record label, Univeral, and taking on homophobes with the aid of the homeless.

When the internet came along the ‘freak’ they wanted to mock they could mock in a very public, Mediaeval English way. I am a big target for a lot of those type of people.

Extra material from the interview with Patrick Wolf.

Patrick Wolf talks collaborations, and what it means to be a performer.

When I changed my name to Wolf I was sixteen. In my early interviews I said I was a werewolf and I was born in a lighthouse on an island.

An Interview with Paul Burston

04 Jul 2009 / Comments Off / in Interviews/by Christopher Bryant

An interview with Paul Burston about The Gay Divorcee.

Polari Magazine talks to Paul Burston about contemporary gay fiction, the trashy gay press, and gay marriage.

I had a friend who was once married to a woman and had then married his male partner of twenty years. That got me thinking about the potential for a story about a man who gets married twice.

Clementine on marriage, and the outfits

Clementine waxes lyrical on the subject of marriage and, of course, gets dressed up for the occasion. She then looks up gay marriage in the dictionary of Polari and Gay Slang …

Wedding night, noun, refers to the first time two men have sex … together …

Gay businessman Gino Meriano writes about Civil Partnerships.

The founder of Pink Weddings Ltd and The Gay Wedding Show writes about the legal implications of civil partnerships and social significance of full marriage equality.

Elizabeth I and her marriage to the throne of England

04 Jul 2009 / Comments Off / in Polari Facts/by Polari Facts

Polari Facts celebrates an historical marriage.

Was Elizabeth really a man in drag? Would her marriage have been the first same-sex marriage in history? Questions, questions …

This transformative era in British history produced its greatest playwright, William Shakespeare. As a court writer he was required to validate the position of his sovereign. An important part of his job was to make sense of her reign. This is the reason there is so much cross-dressing in his work.

Villains: DC Political lobbies deprive people rights

04 Jul 2009 / Comments Off / in Heroes & Villains/by Rebel Scum

Political lobbyists in Washington, D.C., promote mob rule.

Democracy is a difficult subject, and US lobby groups The National Organization for Marriage and Stand 4 Marriage DC think it means mob rule. They are the latest paranoid church-goers who think that same-sex marriage threatens the decent values of upstanding Americans and … Well, you know the drill.

It seems the citizens are concerned that the legalization of same-sex marriage threatens their freedom as Americans to impose their values on others. Apparently, churches that do not get behind the law are threatened with losing their tax exemption, and some such stuff.

Bachelors and Married Men

04 Jul 2009 / Comments Off / in Blogs/by Scott De Buitleir

On the theme of Bachelors and Married Men.

Scott De Buitléir likes the idea of gay marriage both personally and politically.

When I got older, however, and once hormones started kicking in, I still dreamt of getting married and having a family one day. The only difference is that I realised that I’d want to marry a man instead.

The Handmaid’s Tale • Margaret Atwood

324 pages • McClelland and Stewart • 1985

Atwood’s great dystopian novel about a futuristic fundamentalist society is spellbinding and bewildering.

The Handmaid’s Tale is a virtuoso performance, and Atwood’s great definitive statement on the dangers inherent in the postmodern era.

I’ve Never Been to Me

09 May 2009 / Comments Off / in Books/by Christopher Bryant

[rating=1]
392 pages • Beautiful Books • November 6th, 2008 [HB]

The as-told-to autobiography of the voice behind “I’ve Never Been To Me” does not sit well with Christopher Bryant.

I’ve Never Been To Me is so unreal that it is like reading the autobiography of a fictional character who has orchestrated the writing of said biography through a second party. The fact that this second party has the unlikely name of Jordan Paramor only heightens the sense of that it is one step removed from everyday reality.
