Villains: United for Life Ethiopia

  • A garphic that looks like sprayed garffiti onto a stone wall that reads "Death Penalty in Ethiopia". There is a spray of red blood over the wall and graffiti.

United for the Death Penalty.

Rebel Scum takes a look at how meddling in African politics by the usual suspects from the US Christian Right is on the way to bringing in the death penalty for homosexuality in Ethiopia.

“Homosexuality is coming! It’s a pandemic! Do you want to spend endless days of chanting ‘Born This Way’ and watching reruns of Project Runway? No! Defend your way of life.”

Villains: Vladimir Putin

The Russian Bear Roars.

Rebel Scum gets a fly-on-the-wall look behind Putin’s homophobic policies and finds opportunism and ambitious underlings …

“Comrade, it is your chance to show all of Russia that you oppose the decadence of the West, and to restore the confidence of a populace grown fat with a yearning for McNuggets and the films of Bruce Willis.”

War on the Buses

The organisation Core Issues Trust is paying for a pro “ex-gay” London bus ad campaign. But will anyone understand it? “Not gay! Post-gay and proud. Get over it.” Excuse me?

“I often explain to people what the term “ex-gay” is supposed to mean and they look at me like I have a screw loose. Which is as it should be.”

Anti-LGBT vote has one more vote before it is passed

Sign the allout.org petition to protest against the bill to criminalise any writing supporting LGBT people in Russia.

“Imagine for a moment the new St. Petersburg – where newly empowered “thought police” can fine you for any mention of the well known fact that famed Russian composer Tchaikovksy, a St. Petersburg native, was gay.”

Villains: The Conservative School of Diversion Tactics

14 Feb 2012 / Comments Off / in Heroes & Villains/by Rebel Scum

Lady Warsi gets a state-funded holiday to the Vatican

Lady Warsi talks nonsense about Christianity and tries to divert attention from the dismantling of the NHS

The tactic of the current Christian Right is to cry victim, but what they really want is the right to persecute others using whatever biblical statute will do the job. And so Lady Warsi launches her attack on the secular mind.

Villains: On US gay-conversion tactics … again

28 Jan 2012 / Comments Off / in Heroes & Villains/by Rebel Scum

The US Christian Right are at it again, this week in London

The organisation Core Issues Trust is playing host to US Reparative Therapy speaker and claiming it is only trying to help people who do not want to be gay

They are interested in a promoting an alternate reality in which you wish for something and it is made so – as long as an appropriate Bible quotation is tacked onto the end.

Villains: How British Christians are being Americanised

21 Jan 2012 / Comments Off / in Heroes & Villains/by Rebel Scum

Now the mild-mannered British Christians are now acting like the US Christian Right

The Christian Institute are waging a war against the Politically Correct Brigade, who’ll stop you wearing a Cross and force you to watch lesbian soap operas.

Traditionally, the Americans have been the pit-bull terriers of Christ, tearing up everything in their path and crapping over the aftermath.

Villains: Linda Harvey

There are no fairies at the bottom of the garden!

The bizarre world of Linda Harvey, where homosexuals do not exist and where homosexuals (even though they do not exist) are out to take away the rights of heterosexuals and Scout leaders.

Harvey assumes the mantle of Jesus’ PR, a role to which she adds her own particular insights, although I’m not sure that she has work-shopped her thoughts with the Boss …

Villains: Tony the Messiah and the Anti-Gay U.S. Preachers

16 Mar 2010 / Comments Off / in Heroes & Villains/by Rebel Scum

A critique of the Tony Blair Faith Foundation.

Why, asks Rebel Scum, is Tony Blair Faith Foundation forging links with the Christian Right in the United States? Is the soldier of Christ once again at war with the idea of democracy, and displacing it in favour of “faith factors”?

The militaristic Blair, a soldier of Christ, calls this latest mission a “faith offensive”. There is something rather apt about that phrase.

On the bully

03 Oct 2009 / Comments Off / in Heroes & Villains/by Rebel Scum

On the effects of the bully on children and adults.

The bully never goes away. The schoolyard bully, the celebrity bully, the political bully: from the street to the television their influence in insidious. Rebel Scum looks at what can be done about it.

The bully is a staple in the life of every school kid. And being bullied is an experience everyone goes through in one form or another – from run-ins with the boy who has status issues in the schoolyard through to the mainstream gay press telling you just what it means to be a ‘proper gay’.

Polari Magazine is all these: it's a gay online magazine; it's a gay and lesbian online magazine; it's an LGBT arts and culture magazine. Ultimately, it is a queer magazine.
