Future Souls • Uh Huh Her

03 Apr 2014 / Comments Off / in Music/by John Preston

[rating=3]
Released March 25, 2014
The latest album from Uh Huh Her, Future Souls, is a concession to the dance floor as well as a continuation of their elegant, electro-pop sound.

“For a dance album it’s maybe surprising that the two best songs on Future Souls are the most introverted and intimate.”

Trouble’s Lament • Tori Amos

03 Apr 2014 / Comments Off / in Music/by Andrew Darley

[rating=4]
Released March 28, 2014
Trouble’s Lament is fun and fresh, capturing Tori Amos’ charismatic personality, wit and unmatched ability to whisk you away with a story.

“The song tips its hat to her homeland of North Carolina, with a welcome surprise of Southern Blues – and it’s deeply ingrained, almost as if it’s calling her back.”

Confronting Tom of Finland

01 Apr 2014 / Comments Off / in Features/by Adam Thorburn

Sexist, Racist, Misogynistic.

Tom of Finland is celebrated for his assertion of a masculine homosexuality. Was this revolutionary, asks Adam Thorburn, or were darker cultural forces at work?

“Lurking behind every image of Tom’s masculine gods is the specter of a limp-wristed homosexual. Tom of Finland’s career as a pornographer can be regarded as a mission to rescue homosexuality from the contamination of effeminacy.”

Valencia: The Movie/s

Cert: 18 • US: 105 min • Radar Productions • June, 2013

Multiple directors, multiple actors, and Angelina Jolie make Valencia: The Movie/s a mirror to our own, hot, dirty, radical queer lives.

“It’s hard not to feel personally invested in this film. Michelle Tea’s messy, drunk memoirs became a metaphor for so many of us dirty queers, with its bad-choice adventures, stone cold girlfriends, hot bartenders, poetry and sex work. “

Her Own Way: An Interview with Lisa Stansfield

24 Mar 2014 / Comments Off / in Interviews/by Nick Smith and Bryon Fear

Her Own Way.

Lisa Stansfield talks about new album Seven, the politics of appearing naked in videos and how social media has changed the industry for the performer.

“There are two different sides to music now: there’s the big TV corporate thing and then there’s the side where artists have had the bollocks to actually do what they want themselves. I think it’s so admirable when people do that and twenty years later it’s given me the chance to do it that way too.”

Awake • Tycho

20 Mar 2014 / Comments Off / in Music/by Andrew Darley

[rating=3]
Released March 18, 2014
Awake is released four years after Tycho released Dive. It is both the successor and sonic extension of that album.

“His choice in direction shifts Tycho away from his previous studio-focused experimentations into an act that you can visualize, almost hear, in a live music setting.”

About Polari Magazine

Polari Magazine is an LGBT arts and culture magazine that explores the subculture by looking at what is important to the people who are in it. It’s about the lives we lead, not the lifestyles we’re supposed to lead.

Its content is informed & insightful, and features a diverse range of writers from every section of the community. Its intent is to help LGBT readers learn about their own heritage and to sustain a link between the present and the past.

Polari is designed to nurture the idea of community, whether that be social and political, or artistic and creative. It is your magazine, whether you want to read it, or whether you want to get involved in it, if you're gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, or queer.

Polari Magazine is all these: it's a gay online magazine; it's a gay and lesbian online magazine; it's an LGBT arts and culture magazine. Ultimately, it is a queer magazine.
