A love affair with Bar Wotever begins

Bar Wotever

…………………………………………………………………………………………………

Last night the organisers at Bar Wotever invited team Polari for a night out at London’s premier alternative gay venue, the Royal Vauxhall Tavern. And what a night it was. To our shame none of us had been before, despite the club’s five year strong history. It won’t however be the last time.

Bar Wotever is a wholly inclusive performance arts club night that fuses a real sense of community & social responsibility with art and culture. If Polari Magazine was a club night it would look very much like Bar Wotever. The punters were a healthy mixed-bag of age, sex, gender identity and sexuality. The variety of people present was reflected in the eclectic mix of retro tunes that greeted us upon our arrival and that would later usher us back out onto the streets of Vauxhall several hours later. The night’s events began with an open mic ‘community news’ session where members of the audience had the opportunity to tell their fellow revelers the good, the bad and the ugly news regarding LGBT History month activities, trans-suicides and hate crimes in the East End. In-house club and birthday announcements followed before the infectious Scream Club & Electrosexual, who were seriously brilliant, took to the stage.

In the coming weeks Polari Magazine will be writing a feature about Bar Wotever and their upcoming event night at the Scala, so watch this space.

In the meantime all that’s left to say is thanks to Ingo for her time and hospitality, and to Ronan for the introductions. Check out Bar Wotever and if you’re in Camden tonight go see Scream Club & Electrosexual at the Dublin Castle, you won’t be disappointed!

About Polari Magazine

Polari Magazine is an LGBT arts and culture magazine that explores the subculture by looking at what is important to the people who are in it. It’s about the lives we lead, not the lifestyles we’re supposed to lead.

Its content is informed & insightful, and features a diverse range of writers from every section of the community. Its intent is to help LGBT readers learn about their own heritage and to sustain a link between the present and the past.

Polari is designed to nurture the idea of community, whether that be social and political, or artistic and creative. It is your magazine, whether you want to read it, or whether you want to get involved in it, if you're gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, or queer.

Polari Magazine is all these: it's a gay online magazine; it's a gay and lesbian online magazine; it's an LGBT arts and culture magazine. Ultimately, it is a queer magazine.
