The draconian politics of Uganda concerning homosexuality are again in the news this week. A newspaper has published a story naming 100 homosexuals and calling for them to be hanged because if they aren’t they’ll go out and recruit 1,000,000 homosexuals by 2012. The US Christan Right has been in Uganda for years telling its usual fictions about homosexuality and, through its close ties with Ugandan Parliament member David Bahati, encouraging laws such as the Anti-Homosexuality Bill of 2009 which, had it passed, would have introduced the death penalty for homosexual acts. This is selective Christianity at work again: they hunt and peck through the Bible finding quotes that support their prejudices, and in so doing find them. It is odd that Jesus, their apparent saviour, does not get a look in. It’s mostly Leviticus and Paul. The idea that you can ‘recruit’ homosexuals is a paranoid conclusion of the simpleminded. Watch out for them. They’re everywhere.
