The Stranger’s Child • Alan Hollinghurst

17 Jul 2012 / Comments Off / in Books/by Tim Bennett-Goodman

[rating=5]
564 pages • Picador • May 24, 2012 [PB]

An historical, family saga; a monumental novel that is greater than Hollinghurst’s works to date.

“At the risk of sounding an irreverent note (and without wishing in any way to belittle Hollinghurst’s towering achievement) there is more than a fleeting suggestion of Brideshead Revisted-meets-Downton Abbey in The Stranger’s Child.”

A re-introduction to Plan B

16 Jul 2012 / Comments Off / in Features/by Little Bastard

Get Ready for iLL Manors.

Polari’s music reviewer Little Bastard takes a look at the career of Ben Drew, and argues that he is the poet for a generation.

“A punch-in-the-face social drama with a pop video aesthetic, iLL Manors sweats “debut film” from every pore – and whilst it is a flawed film, creativity and brutal style ooze out of every frame, and it left me feeling thoroughly violated for several hours afterwards.”

Fantasea • Azealia Banks

14 Jul 2012 / Comments Off / in Music/by Little Bastard

[rating=4]
Released July 12, 2012
‘Fantasea’ has an authentic, underground, raw sound that separates it from the other American hiphop mix tapes flooding the internet.

“If you grew up with Lil’ Kim and Missy Elliot and have a taste for filthy, feisty Femcees then you should love Azealia Banks. She’s Nicki Minaj without the commercial kookiness.”

Undressed • Pansy Division

13 Jul 2012 / Comments Off / in Classics: Music/by Walter Beck

[rating=5]
Released March, 1993

This is out and proud gay punk, completely up front and not hiding behind metaphors.

“It’s the defiance and frankness of the lyrics that sets this album apart from the catalogue of ‘gay music’. Up until this point, most songs catering to a gay audience were soaked in metaphor and coded lyrics.”

World Pride, London 2012.

A gallery of images from World Pride hosted by Pride London on Saturday, July 7.

“However, nothing spurs on a marginalised community than staring into the face of adversity. The attendance on the march was far greater than I have seen in years and the atmosphere was defiant and joyous.”

Lost And Found • Moya

[rating=5]
Released July 9, 2012
An album that is vibrant, promising, diverse, heartfelt, eclectic and sincere.

“Lost and Found is truly a triumph for Moya, a stellar and eclectic collection of well-written, diverse songs embracing leftfield-pop, summery anthems, latin, rock, electronica and soul with wonderful sultry and solid vocals.”

World Pride 2012 – A very British crisis?

03 Jul 2012 / Comments Off / in Opinion/by Tim Bennett-Goodman

Austerity Britain Comes to World Pride.

Keep calm and carry on, World Pride 2012 fell apart and Boris Johnson failed London one more time.

“Is it really worth jeopardising London’s international standing as a fun city to live, work and do business in for the sake of a reported measly £65,000, which probably amounts to little more than a bankers’ bonus-celebration dinner?”

Cert: TBC • UK: 13.50 min • Urucumedia • May, 2012

When a teenager learns he is HIV+ that’s not all he discovers about himself.

“Mum’s boyfriend Stuart, a veritable ‘Mr. Robinson’ whose sexual proclivities would make Oedipus ruffle a newspaper and ask anyone if they wanted a cup of tea.”

Polari Magazine is all these: it's a gay online magazine; it's a gay and lesbian online magazine; it's an LGBT arts and culture magazine. Ultimately, it is a queer magazine.
