17 Dec 2012 / Comments Off / in Oral Histories/by Yvonne Aburrow

Bona Equality.

Yvonne Aburrow recalls a reading of the Bible in Polari and writes about the role of the Unitarians in achieving LGBT equality.

“Before Polari became the name of this online magazine it was a secret form of language, spoken mostly by gay men and lesbians, with a complex and eclectic history encompassing drag queens, actors, travelling circus people, sailors, Italians, American airforce men and even Punch and Judy entertainers.”

Always You, Edina is a deeply moving, deeply satisfying novel about a woman larger than life, and the impact she had on her family.

“’Aunt Ed was Gina Lolobrigida and Grace Kelly – fire and ice,’ the older and wiser Bonnie recalls. The magic of Edina’s personality, and the sway she had over others, is seen through the eyes of a child.”

To Be or Not To Be.

Andrew Darley is asked why he wants to be a godfather to his brother’s as-yet-to-be-conceived child and puzzles over his answer.

“It wasn’t until a close friend of mine outright asked me ‘Why would you want to be a Godfather if you don’t believe in God?’ that I began to mull over it. “

“3 years ago, in an article about the invention of Christmas, Polari featured an image of the nasty old gay hating, D&G sandal wearing Pope Benedict XVI, as … what else? The Grinch. We thought a Hitler moustache would just be too cliché.”

This album of remixes remoulds and reimagines the material Biophilia and pumps it full of new blood and beats.

“Some say that good artists borrow, great artists steal. If this is the case, each and every remix on here is a masterful product of thievery, as this compilation is exhilarating and outshines some of its source material.”

About Polari Magazine

Polari Magazine is an LGBT arts and culture magazine that explores the subculture by looking at what is important to the people who are in it. It’s about the lives we lead, not the lifestyles we’re supposed to lead.

Its content is informed & insightful, and features a diverse range of writers from every section of the community. Its intent is to help LGBT readers learn about their own heritage and to sustain a link between the present and the past.

Polari is designed to nurture the idea of community, whether that be social and political, or artistic and creative. It is your magazine, whether you want to read it, or whether you want to get involved in it, if you're gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, or queer.

Polari Magazine is all these: it's a gay online magazine; it's a gay and lesbian online magazine; it's an LGBT arts and culture magazine. Ultimately, it is a queer magazine.
